Call of Thrones (Part Three)

Upgrading
Call of Thrones - Weapon Rank UpgradeCall of Thrones - Pet Rank UpgradeCall of Thrones - Relic Rank Upgrade
Most of the in-game stuff is designed to be upgradable, from weapons & armors to pets, mounts & relics to even the gems that you socket. However, to upgrade these items takes a massive amount of time, money and effort.

Take for instance weapons. To upgrade my orange level 10 weapon to rank 2 requires 2 copper bars and 2400 coins (chance of success is unknown). To make 1 copper bar (only 80% chance of success), I will need 10 copper ingots. To get 1 copper ingot, I will need 10 copper ores (luckily the chance of success here is 100%). Finally, to get these copper ores, I will need to stand at a copper mine for a few hours to get the necessary amount. This is because mining at the copper mine will mostly get you crushed ores unless you raise the copper mining skill (found under the trade skill tree).

And note that this is only for rank 1 to rank 2. I believe the item requirements will only become more demanding as you rank it higher. However, there is an alternative where you can buy the copper ores from the weapons NPC or from other players via auctions at a pretty steep price.

To upgrade your pet, mount or relic, you will need to kill a certain amount of monsters (above a certain level) first. Then you will need to gather a certain amount of pet training guides or identification scrolls. These guides and scrolls are in turn obtained either as rewards from certain quests or exchanged from the pet/mount & relic upgrade NPCs using tokens that you get from finishing instances. Sounds like we're in for a bunch of hard work just to upgrade them.

Gems
Call of Thrones - Gemstone Crafting TableCall of Thrones - Creating Gems LowCall of Thrones - Creating Gems Mid
There are 5 kinds of coloured gems that you can make at the gemstone crafting table, green, red, blue, yellow and rainbow. Additionally, each kind of coloured gem have their own variety that boosts different stats. Depending on how you want to build your character, players can choose to make gems that boosts the stats they want. Furthermore, there are various levels of quality for any particular gem that is chosen (ranging from low to cosmic). The higher the quality of the gem, the better the stats that it boosts.

To craft a gem of a higher quality, you will need a certain amount of gems of a lower quality and of the same variety (boosts the same stats). Therefore, to obtain for example a gem of "super" quality, you will have to start crafting from gemstone shards (obtained from crystal mines), make them into "low" quality gems, then into "mid" quality gems and finally into a "super" quality one. To make things more difficult, the chances of successfully crafting gems decreases as the quality of the gems you craft increases. For crafting high-end gems, like "mega", "ultra" and "cosmic", sublimation stones may also be required.

Sockets
Call of Thrones - Unlocking Gemstone Sockets 1Call of Thrones - Unlocking Gemstone Sockets 2
Likewise, there are also 5 kinds of coloured sockets that you can make on your equipment, green, red, blue, yellow and rainbow. However, the colour of the socket that is made on the equipment is not decided by us, the players. It is determined randomly by the game.

Every time the player attempts to socket an equipment, a certain amount of coins will be deducted and the game will unlock a random number of sockets for the equipment (0 socket to 4 sockets). For sockets that are unlocked, they will each be allocated with a random colour.
Call of Thrones - Embedding Gemstones
All coloured sockets, except rainbow, can only be embedded with gems of the same colour. A rainbow socket, however, can be embedded with all the 5 kinds of coloured gems.

If you don't like the number or colour of the sockets you get, you can always re-roll. You will have to pay the fees again and run the risk of losing the sockets that were unlocked or have the colour of the sockets that you want changed. To circumvent this risk, you can opt to "lock" the sockets by paying gold (100 gold = 1 USD).

Titles
Call of Thrones - Upgrading Titles SergeantCall of Thrones - Upgrading Titles Legendary
In Call of Thrones, apart from having good equipment, I believe that to dish out massive damage and improve your character's PVP ability, one needs to rank up to a decent title as well. This is because every rank up in title improves your character's stats like damage, defense, speed, HP & EP limits and HP & EP recovery.

To rank up your title, you will need two things, merits and referrals. Merits can be obtained from completing certain quests like those given by the NPCs right outside of instances. Alternatively, you can exchange artifact shards for merits at the Chief Magistrate.
Call of Thrones - Purchasing Referrals
As for referrals, you can either purchase them using coins at the Referral Officers in Shop Districts or you can buy them using gold at the cash shop. Do note that the referral officers only allows you to buy one referral scroll per day, so it would take you quite a while to obtain enough scrolls to rank up your title. And be sure to check that you've bought the right ones because there are quite a few types of these referral scrolls, each used for ranking up to different titles. Always check at the Chief Magistrate first before buying so as to prevent yourself from getting the wrong ones.

Zodiac
Call of Thrones - Zodiac System
This is a recently implemented system that primarily increases a character's damage and defense attributes. In this system, there are 5 different zodiacs which the character can train. For explanation purposes, I'll use the following as an example.
  • Aries
    Enhances damage, defense and health.
  • Capricorn
    Enhances damage, defense and accuracy.
  • Sirius
    Enhances damage, defense and dodge.
  • Pisces
    Enhances damage, defense and block.
  • Aquarius
    Enhances damage, defense and critical.
The names of the zodiac might differ depending on your nation, but the attributes increased and principles remain the same.

To train a zodiac, you will first need to acquire zodiac points. These zodiac points accumulate only when your online and also depends on the activity your character is doing.
Call of Thrones - Training 1Call of Thrones - Training 2
Firstly, regardless of what your character is doing, 1 zodiac point will be awarded for every 36 seconds of online time. Lastly, additional zodiac points will be awarded depending on the activity your doing during your online time as follows.
  • Training
1 zodiac point will be awarded every 18 seconds.
  • Auto-quest (VIP or Gold)
1 zodiac point will be awarded every 54 seconds.
  • Auto-quest (Voucher)
1 zodiac point will be awarded every 72 seconds.
If you don't like all these, you can always choose to purchase zodiac pills using gold. Each of these pills will give you 600 zodiac points.
Call of Thrones - Activating ZodiacCall of Thrones - Upgrading Zodiac 1Call of Thrones - Upgrading Zodiac 2
Initially, only one of the zodiac is activated and trainable. The other four zodiacs will need to be activated by the players using zodiac points. Each attempt to activate a zodiac will require 600 zodiac points. The chance of success is very low at first, but every failed attempt will increase the chance of success in the next attempt (performed on the same zodiac).

To train zodiacs which are activated will cost you 50 zodiac points per attempt. Similarly, the chance of success is very low but will increase with every failed attempt.

For each zodiac, there are altogether 9 tiers and each tier has 81 levels. You will need to start from tier 1 level 0, slowly upgrade it to tier 1 level 81 before you can rank it up to tier 2. This will go on until you've reach its maximum at tier 9 level 81.

To make this task even more arduous, there is a daily limit on the usage of zodiac points. You can only spend 600 zodiac points a day, regardless of how many zodiac points you may have. The only way to overcome this limit is by resetting it using gold.

So you've practically got hell waiting for you if your going to rank all the 5 zodiacs. On the other hand, if you DO manage to max all 5 zodiacs, I reckon you will literally be GOD in the game. Good luck, all you god-wannabes.

Call of Thrones (Part Two)

Skills
Call of Thrones - Gaining Trade Skill Points
Skill learning in Call of Thrones differ from regular MMOs. It does not give players a fixed amount of skill points upon leveling. Instead, one skill point is awarded to the relevant skill tree every time the player uses a skill or does something which requires a skill.

If you use a dual-wield skill to attack a foe during battle, one skill point will be awarded to the dual-wield skill tree. If you mined a resource or disassembled an item, you will be awarded one skill point to the trade skill tree.

If at this point your thinking that it will be easy to level skills in this game, perish that thought because it ain't so. Regardless of the rank of the skill you use, you will only get one skill point per usage, however ranking up a skill will require progressively more and more skill points (about hundreds to thousands or more of skill points per jump).

And considering the fact that I'm only referring to one skill in the skill tree, can you imagine the amount of time and hard work you will need to finish leveling all the skills in the skill tree? (Multiply it by four if you plan on completing all four skill trees that you have.)

If you happen to misallocate your skill points, you can always hit the reset button (at the bottom of skill window) and pay 50,000 coins to reallocate them. Additionally, if at any point you start to dislike a skill tree, you can click the forget button to remove the skill tree. Just make sure that you've thought about it carefully and have selected the correct skill tree to remove.

Combat
Call of Thrones - Combat
Combat in Call of Thrones is active turn-based. If you look at the bottom of your interface (around the middle), you can see a cyan colour bar that increases with time during combat. This is the "action bar" which determines when you perform an action.

The action bar is divided evenly into ten portions. How fast the action bar fills will depend upon your speed and the moment all ten portions are filled, you can perform an action. An action can be either a simple attack, using a skill or a potion. Each of these actions when performed will consume a certain amount of the action bar.

For example, a normal attack consumes 5 action slots. This means that when you do a normal attack on an enemy, half of the action bar will be consumed to perform the attack. After which your action bar will start filling up again, but this time from the halfway point since you only used half of the bar and still had half. Upon filling the bar once more, you can then perform your next action.

Do note that your character will not perform any actions whatsoever if you do not order it to do anything even when your action bar is filled. Time will not stop. Your character will just stand there like a block of wood while the enemy continues to unleash attacks on you.

Next, let's touch on the five buttons that you see below the action bar. These buttons are probably useless if you like to fight battles personally, however it would still be good to know about them.

They are actually a simple auto-combat system that's provided by the game for our convenience. Once you've turned it on, an AI system will take control of your character to fight battles. Just click on the "Manual/Auto-combat" toggle button to turn the AI on or off.

There are four stances which the AI can take, offensive, balanced, defensive and support. Each stance have its own list of actions which takes priority. For example, taking an offensive stance will result in the AI prioritizing attack related actions first. It will only heal or pot when its HP or EP is below 20%.
Call of Thrones - Character AttributesCall of Thrones - Stealing HP & EP
Since we mentioned about HP and EP, perhaps you ought to know that HP and EP only regenerates during combat (about ten seconds per tick). The amount of HP and EP recovered per tick depends on your HP and EP recovery stats. For every 1 HP recovery and 1 EP recovery that your character has, it will regenerate 20 HP and 5 EP per tick respectively.

Furthermore, if your character's HP and EP drain stats are not zero, every hit that your character or pet performs on the enemy will steal you some HP and EP. For every 1 HP drain and 1 EP drain that your character has, every hit will steal you 10 HP and 1 EP respectively.

Equipments
Call of Thrones - Quests List
There are five grades of equipment in this game, white, green, blue, orange and purple(most common to rarest). And as far as I know, white, green and blue equipment are mostly obtained from instances. Orange equipment can be obtained when you level up to multiples of 10 and when you rank your title up, like from private to corporal.
Call of Thrones - Legendary Gear TraderCall of Thrones - Requiring Artifact Shards
As for purple equipment, you will need to exchange for them from the NPC in the shop district of major cities, like waymarsh. The NPC will demand that you hand over some amount of artifact shards for each piece of purple equipment. These artifact shards are in turn exchanged from tokens that you get from doing instances at heroic or legendary level.

Instances
Call of Thrones - Instances List on World Map
The very first instance you will encounter in Call of Thrones is Rockshore at level 15. From there onwards, you will gain access to one or two more instances for every 5 levels that you get.

From what I've gathered so far, instances form a major part of playing Call of Thrones. You will regularly visit them for leveling purposes, getting of merits to rank up your title, farming of equipments, items and tokens.
Call of Thrones - Selecting Instance Difficulty
There are three difficulty settings for instances, normal, heroic and legendary. The more difficult the setting, the better the loot and rewards you get upon completion. Instances created at normal difficulty costs nothing, however creating heroic and legendary instances will cost 15 SP(spirit points) and 30 SP respectively. The only ways to replenish used spirit points is by using spirit potions (bought from the cash shop or obtained from some quests) or wait for it to reset once per day.

Call of Thrones (Part One)

Call of ThronesCall of Thrones is a 3D browser-based MMORPG that was first published by GameWave.net under the title (天纪) in China.

The game is also released in three other regions under the names of Call of Thrones(North America), War of Thrones(Malaysia) and Conquest of Thrones(EU).

To play this game, one will need to install a relatively small application called "Fancy 3D". Apparently, this is the engine that the developers used to run the 3D game.

Character Creation
Call of Thrones - Character Creation
Character creation in this game is pretty simple in my opinion, although I can't help but feel that it is a bit lacking and limited. Firstly, there's an option to make your character male or female. Then there's another option to change your character's hairstyle and finally, a third option to change its facial features.

All of these hairstyles and facial features are preset ones which cannot be further customised. You cannot even change the colour of the hairstyle or eyes that you liked.

Another thing that I didn't like about the game's character creation is its lack of description for the "Select Region" option. I mean, what is the option for and why should a person choose a particular one instead of the others? For someone new to the game, they would be practically clueless.

Well...for the sake of the readers, this is what I have gathered after playing the game for a little while. Firstly, this game is set in a turbulent era of the Three Kingdoms in China. In this era, there are three mutually hostile factions, Wei, Shu and Wu. So naturally, the option is actually asking for which faction you would like your character to be in. Your choice will ultimately determine the faction you would be fighting for in the game during the wars for cities.

You need not be overly worried about the selection window on the right as it is merely for cosmetic purposes. It merely gives you a preview of how your character would look like when its at a high level.

Graphics
Call of Thrones - Game InterfaceCall of Thrones - Interacting with NPCs
Frankly speaking, the graphics in this game isn't top-notch. The character looks a bit weird around the edges and doesn't seem to fit into the environment. The HUD looks cluttered and there isn't a "full screen" button in sight. To overcome the cluttered feel, it is best to play this game in at least 1280 x 960 resolution. You might also wish to consider pressing F11 to switch your browser(IE or firefox) to full screen mode.

However, if we considered the loading times and the fact that its a browser game, then these flaws doesn't seem that glaring anymore.

Character Attributes
Call of Thrones - Character Attributes & InventoryCall of Thrones - Character Attributes
There are four main character attributes in Call of Thrones, Strength, Stamina, Agility and Leadership.
  • Strength
Each point in strength gives +3 damage, +1 accuracy and +5 HP.
  • Stamina
Each point in stamina gives +20 HP, +5 defense, +1 EP and +1 block.
  • Agility
Each point in agility gives +2 critical, +2 dodge, +2 accuracy and +5 HP.
  • Leadership
    Not yet available.
For every level that your character gains, you will receive 7 attribute points. You can choose to allocate the points as you please or click on the "Recommended" button to let the game allocate it for you.

Do note that the stats will be allocated differently depending on which weapon you have equipped. For example, if you have a dual wield weapon equipped, the game will allocate 2 points to strength, 1 point to stamina and 4 points to agility (regardless of how many points you may have previously invested into each of the attributes).

One good thing I like is the way they let you preview how the points you've allocated will change your secondary stats. If you don't like what you see, just press the "Undo" button to reallocate the points(as long as you haven't click on the "Accept" button).

Weapon Specialization
Call of Thrones - BriayinCall of Thrones - Weapon Types Strength & Weakness
Do you remember that you have not really made any choices or selected anything remotely similar to a "job" or "class" yet? Well that's because there isn't anything like that in Call of Thrones. You can practically equip anything you get your hands on.

There are four types of weapons in this game, one-handed, two-handed, dual-wield and polearm. And according to what the ingame NPC, Briayin said:
  • One-handed weapons are strong against two-handed weapons, but weak against dual-wield weapons.
  • Two-handed weapons are strong against dual-wield weapons, but weak against polearm weapons.
  • Dual-wield weapons are strong against polearm weapons, but weak against one-handed weapons.
  • Polearm weapons are strong against one-handed weapons, but weak against two-handed weapons.
Confused? Then let's summarize it in a simple table.

Weapon UsedEffect
One-handedDeals +25% damage against two-handed weapon opponents.
Deals -25% damage against dual-wield weapon opponents.
Two-handedDeals +25% damage against dual-wield weapon opponents.
Deals -25% damage against polearm weapon opponents.
Dual-wieldDeals +25% damage against polearm weapon opponents.
Deals -25% damage against one-handed weapon opponents.
PolearmDeals +25% damage against one-handed weapon opponents.
Deals -25% damage against two-handed weapon opponents.

This generally means that depending on what weapons you and your opponent chooses to use in a battle will determine who's in a more favourable position. However, that's not all there is to it.

Although a person can choose any weapons to use in a battle, he or she might not be apt in it. Without learning the proper ways to use the weapon, in this case the skills, this person might just as easily lose to the enemy despite having an advantage.

Specialization Slots & Skill Trees
Call of Thrones - Specialization Slots
Before we touch on skills, you will have to know about specialization slots. Every character in Call of Thrones starts with 0 specialization slots, but can open up to 4 of these slots. The first and second slots are opened by completing certain quests. The third and fourth slots require 5,000 & 50,000 coins(ingame money) respectively. To unlock the slot, just click on the tiny lock icon at the bottom right corner.
Call of Thrones - Dual Wield Skill TreeCall of Thrones - Healing Skill TreeCall of Thrones - Trade Skill Tree
Each of these slots can hold 1 skill tree and this means that your character can learn a maximum of 4 unique skill trees. You can learn a particular skill tree by buying its skill scroll from the respective NPCs.

There are altogether 8 unique skill trees that you can choose to learn.
  • Weapon: One-hand, two-hand, dual-wield & polearm
  • Support: Defense, poison & healing
  • Trading: Trade
As long as you have a free slot, you can learn any skill tree that you desire. However, players are generally advised to stick to one weapon specialization and excel in it rather than learning more than one. The other three slots should be used to learn support and/or trading skill trees.

From my brief playing of the game, I would recommend that you pick up the healing skill tree as it will sustain your character in a tough fight. The trading skill tree is more of a necessity due to the design of the game rather than what I would recommend. You will need to level this skill tree to gain the ability to craft items necessary to upgrade your equipments, that is unless you are willing to buy the items from other players.
